Write Me a Poem

Write Me A Poem

Write me a poem
You said
A pretty poem
With birds singing
Trees swaying in gentle breeze
Butterflies fluttering in fragrant air
Sun shining
In sapphire sky
Happy children playing
In fields of rainbow flowers
And cherry blossom snow
Until the mystical moon tucks them in
Their cozy beds and dreams
A poem with fireflies
Like dancing stars

And… you know…
…Write me a poem like that
You said

But I cannot
For my mind is oppressed
With images of war
Dying soldiers
Never coming home
Suicide bombers
Guns and tanks
Climate change
Dying oceans
Drying rivers
Burning forests
And folks who have given up
So I cannot write your pretty poem
My love

Encounter with a Mermaid

with 4 comments

Alone by the wild sea I sought what I might see;

When all of a sudden, before me on a rock,

Reclined one of the wondrous women of the sea –

A mythical mermaid with whom I wished to talk.

“Mermaid, fair mermaid, why is it you hide?

My wish is to see you and to perhaps know you;

But I cannot find you when you hide in the tide,

And dive behind the waves to keep from my view.”

“I hide for I’m shy and really quite wary,

And I have reason to take care and beware;

For your race’s shown itself to be mostly quite scary

And the kind souls I’ve met have been rather rare.”

“I promise, dear mermaid, that I will tell no one

About you and your sisters and your home in the deep.

I’ll keep very quiet and until you are done,

You’ll not hear from me so much as a peep…

Is it true fair mermaid, that deep under the waves,

Your home is made of polished pearl and pink coral?

Is it true you are keeping captive as your slaves,

The souls of drowned sailors whose lives were immoral?”

“These stories you’ve heard are full of false rumor;

Our home is indeed of coral, pearl but much more.

We live in an aura of love and good humor,

And we do not judge those who pass by our door.”

“But you will admit that at times in the past,

Your voice would enchant sailors as they sailed by.

Entranced by your song and the spell that it cast;

Their ship wrecked and they died to your lullaby.”

“Such stories are foolish and really quite false;

We mermaids have never coaxed sailors to their death.

We watch and we wonder at life’s wonderful waltz,

And we want for nothing for the sea is our wealth.

The nonsense you spoke of is false, foolish folklore.

I hope that this day you have learned about us;

That you’ll change the wrong rumors that were there before,

And leave us alone without any fuss.”

“Thank you, dear mermaid, and I appreciate

The time you have spent answering my quest.

I know that you love and that you do not hate;

And I hope that some day I will be your guest.”

“You’ve asked your questions and I’ve tried to answer.

Now please, excuse me, I’ve company later.

The dolphins are coming for tea and you, sir,

May stay if you wish; you can be the waiter.”

Across the Ocean

with 2 comments

Across the OceanBrittany coast.jpg

I was conceived

Beyond the ocean

Years ago

Long after I had been born here

I went back to the place

Across the ocean

Where I first began

Or so my father showed me

That was a year before

I was blessed with my first child

By some coincidence of time and place

She was begun there as well

That summer

In the land of my ancestors

The Celts

In Brittany

I come from across the ocean

But I am home here

Although I appreciate

My beginnings

Dark Dream

Dark Dream

Dim dreamscape

Dismal

Cold

Dark skeletal trees

Crows peering down

From a starless sky

Your face appears

Your eyes seem sad

Yet

You keep looking at me

Aloofly

Pitilessly

Perhaps disdainfully even

Coal black icicles

Beneath your eyes

Frozen tears?

And then

The stark dark realization

I am looking at the mirror

In my soul

Those frozen tears

Are not from your eyes

But from mine

My heart melts with sorrow

The light goes out

And with it hope

I am not feeding the crows anymore

For there’s nothing left of me

Would You?

with one comment

Would You?

Would you like to walk with me

would you like to talk with me

though I’ve placed my bet

Would you like to dance with me

would you take a chance with me

now that we have met

Would you like to hike with me

would you like to bike with me

though the road is wet

Would you like to roar with me

would you like to soar with me

now we’ve paid our debt

Would you like to race with me

would you like to place with me

though we’ve not run yet

Would you like to weep with me

would you like to sleep with me

now’s no time to fret

Would you like to sail with me

would you like to wail with me

though that’s all we get

Would you like to fly with me

would you like to cry with me

now we take the jet

Would you like to bend with me

would you like to end with me

though we have just met

Would you like to fly with me

would you like to die with me

now the sun has set

Yearnings

In a moment’s lapse
At times
I leave
Myself

I am not
Then
What I am thought to be

Elsewhere
I live
An echo from the past

Full moon
Silver night
Soft snow
Fresh tracks
Scented spoor
Quickened heartbeat
Rush of blood
Coursing
Within my veins
An instinct that will not be denied

I breathe
The moment

A wolf howls

I wonder

Am I really me?

wolf-woman-ll
